Spreckels Lake to be Drained May 28th

May 26th, 2013

I have learned that Spreckels Lake will be drained for repairs starting Tuesday May 28th and reopened by August 20th.

It will be fun and amazing to see the lake empty and what will be found at its bottom. I worry for the turtles, Koi and myriad of birds that live in and use the lake and for the ham radio people that meet there monthly.

I will be looking for a temporary venue to hold our radio practices. My requirements include nearby restrooms and parking. Let me know if you have suggestions.

For our June practice I am planning on June 15th, someplace.

San Francisco Marathon – June 16

The San Francisco Radio Club will be providing radio support for the race medical team. If you are interested in participating as a radio operator contact Nick Powell at For those who do not yet have experience you can ask to be paired with an experienced radio operator. It is a lot of fun and every year the day after the marathon I plan to start my exercise program.

Field Day – June 22

Saturday June 22nd the San Francisco Radio Club W6PW will be hosting ARRL Field Day at Ft. Miley immediately West of the SF VA Hospital. What is Field Day you ask? Come to the SFRC meeting 6/21/13 and learn about Field Day and learn from the High-Master of Field Day, Dean Straw N6BV. Let me know if you have questions about participating in Field Day- a chance to get on HF and talk to hams all over the country and the world. Good food and camaraderie also at the SFRC Field Day.

Best Regards to all of you.

Keep those batteries charged.

And remember: it is better to be prepared years too early, than seconds too late.

Next Practice: 5/18/2013

May 10th, 2013

Greetings 2 Meter Radio Practice Friends,

Our next meeting of the 2 Meter Critical Mass Amateur Radio Practice will be Saturday May 18, 2013, from 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs.
I know there may be a conflict for those attending Makers Faire, but the next weekend is Memorial Day weekend.
For this practice we will have demonstrations of solar power equipment for ham radio use.  If you already have portable solar gear bring it to Spreckels Lake and share it with everyone. If you don’t and are interested on how to get started come to the lake and learn about solar power for ham radio use.
For those of you who cannot make it to the practice we are going to take check-ins from remote stations: your home or car or wherever you are in the city.
Bear in mind we will be using a simplex frequency (no assistance from a repeater) and from your location Spreckels Lake may be difficult to reach.  Visualize radio frequency impediments like buildings and hills between you and the lake. Give it a try.
Our check-in frequency will be 146.550 PL 100 simplex.
Check-ins will be taken from 1000 hrs to 1030 hrs.
Hope to see you or hear you May 18th.
