Spreckels Lake to be Drained May 28th

May 26th, 2013

Drain_Spreckels_Lake_1

I have learned that Spreckels Lake will be drained for repairs starting Tuesday May 28th and reopened by August 20th.

It will be fun and amazing to see the lake empty and what will be found at its bottom. I worry for the turtles, Koi and myriad of birds that live in and use the lake and for the ham radio people that meet there monthly.

I will be looking for a temporary venue to hold our radio practices. My requirements include nearby restrooms and parking. Let me know if you have suggestions.

For our June practice I am planning on June 15th, someplace.

San Francisco Marathon – June 16

The San Francisco Radio Club will be providing radio support for the race medical team. If you are interested in participating as a radio operator contact Nick Powell at NFPowell@gmail.com. For those who do not yet have experience you can ask to be paired with an experienced radio operator. It is a lot of fun and every year the day after the marathon I plan to start my exercise program.

Field Day – June 22

Saturday June 22nd the San Francisco Radio Club W6PW will be hosting ARRL Field Day at Ft. Miley immediately West of the SF VA Hospital. What is Field Day you ask? Come to the SFRC meeting 6/21/13 and learn about Field Day and learn from the High-Master of Field Day, Dean Straw N6BV. Let me know if you have questions about participating in Field Day- a chance to get on HF and talk to hams all over the country and the world. Good food and camaraderie also at the SFRC Field Day.

Best Regards to all of you.

Keep those batteries charged.

And remember: it is better to be prepared years too early, than seconds too late.

Winter Break for The 2 Meter Critical Mass Amateur Radio Practice

December 3rd, 2012

We will be taking a Winter Break.

At winter’s end, I will send out an email announcement with the next practice date.

In the mean time find opportunities to use your radio, learn more about your radio, study for and test for the next level of FFC license, help a fellow ham, refresh your stock of emergency supplies, RECERT with NERT, and participate in nets.

Thanks to all of you who joined me in 2012 at Spreckels Lake to learn and practice.

Best Regards,

Peter McElmury KI6NYQ

Weekly Update, March 13, 2012

March 13th, 2012

I hope to see you at the SFARC meeting 2000 hrs Friday, March 16, 2012.

The Chronicle 5 Day Forecast for San Francisco shows rain for Saturday March 17 – St. Patricks Day and our 2 Meter Radio Practice at Spreckels Lake from 1000 hrs – 1200 hrs. Check the Calendar for more info.

The San Francisco Model Yacht Club has graciously offered us the use of their club facilities for our radio practice.

I have accepted their offer so we can be assured of a dry place to conduct our radio practice (and to get a chance to peek inside that old and mysterious building at Spreckels Lake.
We will start our radio practice from the club building and move outside if the weather permits. Wear something green.

Thanks to Michael K6MLF for arranging this and to Commodore Bob for allowing his Spreckels Lake neighbors the use of the club facilities.

The practice will include a demonstration of a portable solar charging rig, talking on our radios, answering questions and helping other hams, and whatever you want to do.

Check out the SFARC March Newsletter and the Member Profile on page 4.

I uploaded a gallery of photos taken last year at a packet radio class in Sunnyvale, CA.  You will see some pretty amazing home built mobile radio and packet systems. http://2metercriticalmass.com/photos/packet-radio/

Send me photos of your radios in use in the field or at home and I will post them in the Member Radios gallery page to share with everyone.
